Job Search Step 6 - Job Offer

Updated: 5 days ago

Congratulations - you have a job offer. Now what?

High five - you’ve made it to an offer!

Congratulations on getting a job offer

Your offer will most often come from a telephone call, so use the opportunity to find out as much information as possible.

Now, be realistic:

  • Go to your Job Wheel and complete it for this job. How does the job compare to your seven segments? Which ones fall short? If there are segments that do fall short, are you making the right decision by accepting the job?

  • Next, look at your Identity Wheel and place this job in your wider life context. Ask the same questions. What will you be compromising on, and is that acceptable?

  • Make notes to understand what the job offer means for you and your family and what you would need for it to work for you.

Once you understand that, you can go back and negotiate or accept.

Call your recruiter for feedback if you haven't had any contact by a week after the interview.

It is important to know how quickly you need to accept the offer. Ask your recruiter so you know how much time you have. Accepting a new role is just the beginning of the end of your old role and the beginning of what might be big changes in the rest of your life.

Do not do anything about your current role until you understand the process between accepting and starting a new one. In particular, you will need to consider:

  • Your notice period — how long do you need to give, and is that acceptable to your new employer?

  • Whether by giving notice, you will lose your rights to any redundancy payments or outplacement schemes;

  • Any restraint clauses in your contract forbidding you to do particular work for a given time after your employment ends. For example, you may not be allowed to work for a direct competitor for six months after your employment ends;

  • Whether you can positively leave your employer and bring things to a gentle and friendly close;

  • What checks your new employer will need to do — criminal checks, security checks and employment references. If, for example, you're accepting certain government roles, it may take several months to complete checks, so don't hand in your notice too early!

Once you understand the context in which you are accepting, accept and celebrate! If I helped you along the way, I'd love to know.
